There seems to be a great deal of research indicating that diets with a high acidic load are associated with low-grade metabolic acidosis and negative health effects. Yet some members of the medical community say diet does not appreciably change blood pH, so there is no scientific basis for the premise that acidic foods can harm health and alkaline foods can promote health.
Can you reconcile the controversy? Is it possible that high acidic foods promote health in ways other than reducing blood pH? Or is it that high acidic foods foster low-grade metabolic acidosis as opposed to true metabolic acidosis? If so, what exactly is the difference? Please explain in simple terms for a lay audience.
I'd love to hear from a researcher, nutritionist with a PhD, or an expert knowledgeable in this area.
