You’ve just checked into your hotel and dropped your bags in your room. Now what? Many travelers step outside to explore the neighborhood—but is that always a good idea? In some destinations, taking the wrong turn could lead to trouble. In others, you might miss out on the best experiences if you don’t ask the right questions.
I’m working on a story about hotel safety and the very first thing guests should do before they leave the property. Who should you ask for local guidance—concierge, front desk, housekeeping, or someone else entirely? Should you rely on online maps and reviews, or are there better ways to assess what’s safe and what’s not?
If you’ve ever wandered into the “wrong” part of town by accident, or had a hotel go above and beyond to keep you safe, I want to hear your story. What do you wish you had known before stepping outside?
